February 19 & 26 Under the Long White Cloud: A Workshop on New Zealand Artists and Writers with Graham Jefcoate on zoom. In this 2 part workshop, we will explore six places in New Zealand, Aotearoa – the Land of the Long White Cloud – starting in the Northland and ending in the far south. On the trip we’ll take along a number of NZ’s great writers to guide us including Witi Ihimaera, who will introduce us to some of the themes of modern NZ literature and society, and Katherine Mansfield, one of NZ’s (and the English speaking world’s) greatest short story writers. We’ll also view Rita Angus’s iconic painting of the railway station (really no more than a hut) at Cass in Canterbury, and Colin McMahon’s images of the Otago Peninsula. There will be a brief reading list (short stories and texts) and some links to art works and film – all available online – to prepare us for the journey!
